As helicopters circled the campus on Thursday, Michael Bay, big-budget director of Transformers and Bad Boys II, envisioned the aerial shots as part of his new film, Phase II.
Bay was hired by PBA earlier this year to direct the film about the 80-year old octagonal building that will become a rotunda reading room in Phase II of the Warren Library's construction.
"I feel honored to be a part of this process," Bay said. "In time we can make this film another blockbuster."
"I feel honored to be a part of this process," Bay said. "In time we can make this film another blockbuster."
The film begins with a heart-wrenching account of First Baptist Church members constructing the building with their bare hands using the rubble from the destructive 1928 hurricane. Earlier this summer, Bay oversaw the destruction of the Blomeyer Library through the use of dynamite and massive explosions, destroying the work of the aforementioned churchgoers.
Like his 2001 blockbuster Pearl Harbor, Bay is hoping to capture the historical era accurately. He has enlisted the help of the Historical Society of Palm Beach County to ensure that the film is free of anachronisms.
The film's budget is expected to break records, but that doesn't seem to faze the director.
"Of course it's going to be expensive to make this movie," commented Bay, "but you can't create awesome explosions and action-packed adventure without spending a little cash."

In all seriousness, what was that helicopter all about? It was overhead for quite a few hours (you could even hear it in the WPTV5 "vice-presidential debate watching" segment, which is another story for the Bacon if I may add).
hahaha i friggin love it.
i didnt even read the post yet, i just wanted to comment because im so relieved that the bacon'ers are still alive.
now do the new article...
Good story bacon. It seems to be the PBA way - explosively destroy the old in the name of progress, bigger buildings, and lots of money. Whatever happened to the days when Christians scoffed at large sums of money and big buildings and power?
I wonder if the story about the old building will still be in the PBA tour.
Hah! Classic Bacon. Good job folks.
REALLY?! That was not worth the wait.
The reading room better be as nice as St. Peter's if they pay this much.
that first sentence is very funny.
clever little post
I don't think that anyone answered the first anonymous so I will. The helicopter was there because it was actually filming the new roof being put on Phase II. That part is true.
Hee-hee, I'm lovin' it. More Bacon, please.....
The story about the men building the building is true. From PBA library website:
"The present octagon (sanctuary) and the rectangular structure (education wing) were rebuilt after the 1928 hurricane leveled much of the city of West Palm Beach. A group of enterprising men in the church seized the opportunity to construct a permanent building for the congregation.
Lacking money but possessing zeal and a strong faith in God, the builders erected the edifice using 300,000 Georgia clay bricks obtained by buying a local brick kiln and dismantling it, plus bricks gathered from nearby buildings damaged or destroyed by the hurricane, buildings which included a saloon and a bootlegger’s establishment."
In other words, 2008 saw the loss of a great historical building.
The story is no longer in the tour for obvious reasons, black falcon. Poor tour guides...there's always a huge awkward nothingness right about that point in the tour that the brick building story filled up nicely.
The building completed after 1928 and dedicated in 193 2was preserved. The on torn down was built in the 40's and was a leaky rat and cockroach haven that was beyond saving. It had no historical significance other than it was wet and smelled like mold.
The Bacon is better when the writers check the facts first.
There is nothing quite as bad as leaky rats...
To the anonymous two up from me - try to maintain some semblance of coherence before telling someone to 'get their facts straight.' As far as 'leaky rats' and cockroaches; there are these new, beautiful inventions known as pesticides that can actually minimize such infestations... and good luck finding any place in southern Florida without cockroaches.
"The Bacon is better when the writers check the facts first." - What I read was 'the Bacon writers should always take my point of view, and if they don't - they don't have their facts straight.'

KW
I have to agree with KW. That anonymous is a whiner.
*Yawn* Not a good story from Bacon...I am not satisfied
hahahahahahah!!
Has anyone else noticed the sign on the corner of Dixie and Okeechobee that celebrates 40 year's of PBA being around? Are any of those students even from PBA?
This would be a great story Bacon! Where are you?
to the previous anonymous:
a. you make no sense
b. send them an email if you think you're so funny
Are you talking about Sailfish Services? I agree with the above anonymous on both counts.
I'm pretty sure I saw my old roommate from Towers on that billboard....
bacon this is ridiculous.
You not only have posted nothing in the past month, you have left us, your readers, out cold.
We can handle some dry spells, but for heaven's sake, why do you treat us like crap?
How hard is it to write a post informing us that you're busy with school and you'll be back soon? It's not.
Don't take your readers for granted.
Whiners,
IT'S MIDTERM WEEK. Give them a break. If you really want material, SEND IT TO THEM.
To recap and elaborate on Ben:
To all the anonymous who are giving the Bacon crap: shut up. Now.
Stem your feelings of entitlement, I know a lifetime of such feelings are not easily overturned, but consider this:
-The Bacon editors do YOU a service by writing articles.
-The Bacon writers get paid nothing for their services.
-The only reason they do this service is a desire for humor and to offer a alternative to the state newspaper (the Beacon)
In short: they owe you nothing. Stop complaining how they don't satiate your longing for humor. And while we're at it, don't complain about bad quality (real or, more likely - imagined) when they do give you a article.
I know all this may be hard for some, especially if you were raised in an environment where you taught you deserve the servitude of others... but you don't.
in summary - shut up.
Later,
KW
To the previous anonymous:
Let me come to your defense, proving the rationality of your statements.
According to pure logic, seven articles since September 8th (one month before your comment)is nothing. In summary, 7=0.
You feel like you're being treated like crap, which is correct because the writers of the Bacon do in fact personally attack you by having lives and responsibilities of their own.
It is so hard to realize others are busy just by observing the "Midterm Madness" around us so it is necessary to provide countless warning labels each day stating: "The Bacon will not be providing a free service today. We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause you."
I can see how you are being taken for granted. The Bacon is apparently your parent and it would be wrong for it to neglect its child. You are a child, right?
So, please keep complaining and maybe one day you'll get everything you want. Mkay?
The matter is resolved.
Seems like the Bacon staff have been suffering through Midterm month, not week. I try sending them suggestions but they really do suck this year.
And when you all tell me to shut up for saying this, I tell you to shut up for telling me to shut up. We all have a right to express our opinion and mine is that I miss the old Bacon.
The Bacon is dead, long live the Bacon.
"Shut up!"
"No, you shut up..."
"No, YOU shut up..."
"No YOU!"
What is this, kindergarden?
You guys toilet trained yet?
I'm toilet trained. I pooped in the Library today!
Here's an idea, send the bacon a big fat check. Then you can treat them like an employee and demand that they get back to work. When you pay their bills then you get to treat them like crap... that's how capitalism works.
In response to EC Blowmeyer:
I was one of the film students in Dr Joe Webb's Documentary Filmmaking class that created the video about the history of the library. The original church members did not purchase much of anything, certainly not a brick kiln to dismantle. That may have been for the new section, but the original construction was all completed with donated labor and (as you correctly said) recovered bricks from saloons and other buildings demolished by the storm.
I was lucky to be part of an interview with several of the ACTUAL individuals who worked on the original construction. I'm sure that video is in the archives somewhere, Duane Meeks should be able to find a copy for anyone interested.
And in reference to people calling that building rat infested and moldy... I was the first graduate of the Technical Theatre program. I was the student who created it. That building was my HOME for several years, and I personally got to climb through some of the inaccessible places for various jobs.
Yes, it was dusty. Yes, after the two hurricanes flooded the basement, there was some mold. But no rats. Ever. And for the record, 90% of the STENCH in that building was not coming from the theatre at all. It was coming from all the moldy carpets and moldy books on the Library's middle level (the octagonal room) that was NEVER properly de-humidified or air conditioned. Those books REEKED. Blaming the theatre building for the failures of the administration to make even a TOKEN attempt at maintaining the facility is disingenuous to those that worked hard to produce quality art in that place.
PBA Theatre. I enjoyed my time between the columns from 2002-2004. I miss it.
