Students protest Spring Formal 2009

Student Activities is hosting Spring Formal 2009 on April 18. Although the Director of Student Activities, Jennifer Shout, is hoping for the second successful Spring Formal in recent years, some students on campus are putting on large demonstrations in protest.

"I think the Titanic theme is entirely inappropriate," said freshman John Exxon. "Respect for the Sri Lankan deceased is the reason why I didn't go to last year's Spring Formal, too."

The Titanic disaster led to the deaths of 1,517 people, which is seen by the protesters as an insensitive theme for the Spring Formal. The students involved in the protests are promoting a boycott of the event. Unlike past years when no one signed up, Spring Formal 2009 is being boycotted for a reason.

The theme is not the only reason why students are furious.

"Twenty five dollars? That would have been reasonable last year, but I just lost my spending money in the stock market," remarked senior Christopher Cross.

Despite a lack of unity in purpose, students will be staging a sit-on aboard the "SS Ironhorse," the Student Activities golf cart and symbol of naval disasters around the world.

Too many lines have been crossed ever since they renamed Wazoo Weekend "Ike-a-palooza."

Are you serious...protesting because of the Titanic sinking? Any of these kids watch the Leo DeCaprio movie? If they have they are hypocrits!

I think it's a joke.

of course it's a joke!

I didn't realize the Bacon was still writing articles. I used to check it every day, now I barely remember to check once a month.

haha That's hilarious! I loved it. So classic.

I'm not sure if Anonymous #1 is a moron or a satirical genius. Though since the Bacon has been adding pretty much every PBA student on Facebook, perhaps they attracted a reader that is simply unable to perceive satire.

Probably an English major.

I didn't realize the bacon owed you stories everyday, anonymous #3.

PBA Local is starting to make you guys look like dinosaurs...

What's PBA Local?

Anonymous said...

It's a PBA news site that actually gets updated regularly. Pretty good, actually.

its not funny though

Good job to whoever went through all the trouble to set up PBA Local, I'm sure it will be a good source of actual news once I no longer live on campus.

PBA Local was set up by print journalism majors to practice a breaking news format, which is something that is unavailable with the Beacon. It's not open to just print journalism majors; everyone is welcome to contribute.

Shameless Plug,

Who controls PBALocal?
The fact that comments on stories are restricted makes me suspicious that it, like the Beacon, are controlled by the school as yet another form of propaganda.

So I want to know is this just a Shameless Plug for Shameless Propaganda?

So far, PBA Local seems to be a mix between the Beacon and the Bacon. Not spoof and satire (Bacon), but not admin. approved news (The Beacon).
A nice blend of the two.

The PBA Local is actually pretty funny. It's better than the Bacon ever was and has TONS more info. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

PBA Local is totally independent, although the school is really trying to gain control and intimidate the editors

Shameless What Now? said...

I haven't heard anything about intimidation, but I can tell you right now that the only reason comments are moderated is to keep the posts clear of spam. It's the default setting on Wordpress (the platform PBA Local runs on), and makes more sense than letting people post ads for Viagra in the comments section.

If you'd like to talk to any of the contributors of PBA Local, go to the site and you can see who is involved.

(I would punch myself repeatedly before I let an administrator get involved with this site.)

Bacon...oh Baaacccoooonnn...guess you cats are pretty busy. That's cool. Just wish you would tell us that you're not going to post regularly. This relationship needs some communication.

If you don't have time to post, why not a casting call to get some people in here to post regular funnies like the old days?

Anonymous (if that is your real name), I must assume you are no longer connected to campus and thus are unaware that it is currently Spring Break time. Please make a note of this to prevent further - how do I say - less than knowledgeable comments.

Also (for the umpteenth and a half time), send them a @$%$#$ email!
